Severe flooding of the Maribyrnong River in December 2022 has raised major concerns about how many parts of Melbourne would cope with future flood events. These events are predicted to become more severe as the effects of climate change take hold.
Quite massive works are proposed in the Yarra River valley in Bulleen and Heidelberg as part of the North East Link Project. These include tunnelling under the Yarra River, reconstruction of elements of the profile of the river valley, major loss of vegetation including canopy trees in the project corridor, and substantial increases in impermeable road surfaces.
The Stop North East Link Alliance has made a submission to the Legislative Council Environment and Planning Committee Inquiry into the 2022 Flood Event, now under way, which draws attention to concerns about the project which have so far been largely dismissed or ignored.
